Involving young people in peatland work
Do
Site
Magoar-Penvern and Kéroncel (France)
Type of work
Giving students experience of work and issues relating to peatland management through a practical project on a peatland reserve
Work details
One day visit organised for each group, during which a theme is developed to suit the preference of the teachers. Example of themes include:
- peatbog management : details, objectives, difficulties, costs
- fauna, flora and habitats within the site: how vegetation changes with and without management, different management options
- protection of a natural site : limits and usefulness of different statutory instruments at regional, national and European scales.
Preparation
The students are asked to prepare their own material, organize teams and plan the day. Depending on the preference of the teachers, they can follow-up themes developed during the visit, for example through a workshop. They are briefed on safety.
Work in the field
One day's work is the third and last part of their
experience. A full day is necessary for the students to learn
the basics of materials and techniques. Some classes can spend
longer time if they choose. Thanks to the preparatory stages,
students arrive knowing the objective, requirement,
recommendation, techniques used etc. Supervision is by the
teachers, site manager and sometimes other adults (e.g.
woodcutter, carpenter, etc) Materials and security equipment
are provided by the schools and/or are lent to them by the site
managers.
