Taking stock of the project: Looking Ahead 2
Outcome and achievements
Some opportunities for planning, sharing and learning were missed during the LEADER+ Peatland Project. But many more were taken, and many fresh ideas and good contacts were developed and strengthened.
There were four really good and interesting projects planned, done and reviewed. Even more international synergy might have been possible, based on partners' review of progress at the end of the work.
Thanks to this work:
- individual sites have benefited
- local economies have been boosted
- many more people, from a wider range of ages and abilities have access to interesting peatlands and can enjoy them
- knowledge of cultural and historic links between rural people and peatlands has increased, both within individual partner countries and between those countries
- and the EU network of peatland managers and peatland enthusiasts has been widened and strengthened across NW Europe and Scandinavia.
A venture with a future
Those are tokens of this LEADER+ project's success. So too is the desire of many partners - as organisations and individuals from different parts of the European Union - to keep in touch, continue to share information and ideas and look for future ways to CONNECT PEOPLE AND PEATLANDS

Obituary
Fiona Price, a freelance interpretation consultant and copywriter, was heavily involved in the production of this publication but sadly died before the its completion in December 2006 following a short illness fought with characteristic bravery and dignity. Fiona brought her talents as a writer and interpreter to gathering the knowledge generated by the project, recording the findings of the project and planning the structure. Her bright and passionate personality help to forge links between the different nationalities and this publication will stand as just one of many interpretation milestones that she has left for others to benefit from.
