Hurdles and fagots

Hurdles made from wood and earth (see illustration) were of particular use in parts of the site along river banks. Here, flexible, narrow branches, in-filled with earth, were inserted in the side of 'talus' raised banks.

Fagots are bundles of sticks (1 to 2 metres width per bundle), made from heather and gorse. Piled-up in wet areas, they can be used for path construction. This is a traditional Breton technique of improving access across wet areas.

Water can circulate between and within fagot bundles. Thanks to the waterlogged environment, the sticks are long-lasting. A wetland path made in this way can be used by walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders.
