CITES
The provisions of CITES are implemented in the European Community through two EC Regulations.
- Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora by regulating trade therein. (1st June 1997)
- Commission Regulation (EC) No 1808/2001 laying down detailed rules concerning the implementation of Council regulation (EC) No 338/97 on the protection of species of wild fauna and flora by regulating trade therein. (19th September 2001)
These regulations also prohibit the commercial use of specimens of species
listed on their Annex A (except with an appropriate certificate).
More than 2,500 animals and 25,000 plants are listed and include many Scottish
species such as owls, birds of prey, otter, and wildcat, amongst the animals,
and bearberry and stagshorn clubmoss, amongst the plants. See the full list of species afforded
protection by CITES.
